The Nikon D90 has a normal array of shooting modes (Auto, Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual), including five Advanced Scene Modes: Portrait, Landscape, Close-Up, Sports and Night Portrait. It also has what’s called D-Movie. The movie mode works very well with an array of settings available including a HD setting (1080i) and wide screen mode (1280×720 16:9). As the movie mode works with nearly all of Nikon’s lenses, the creative possibilities are vast.

I was skeptical when movie modes started coming around but am now a convert and love the ability to record a quick HD movie and not have to switch cameras. One draw back of the D-Movie mode is the lack of auto-focus while recording. Manual focus can still be achieved, however, depending on the lens in use. The mode is very easy to use while in Live View with the press of a single OK button on the rear of the camera. Sound is only recorded in mono and the playback speaker is nice and loud.

Nikon Coolpix P7100 Review – The 10.1-megapixel Nikon Coolpix P7100 is an updated version of the Nikon Coolpix P7000 and resembles a DSLR that’s had its lens removed and been placed in a compacter. It was with great interest then, that we received news from Nikon of a successor. The P7100 isn’t hugely different to the P7000 in terms of specification – it utilizes the same 10MP CCD as its predecessor (and is thus limited to the same 720p video specification) and the same lens. The LCD screen might be articulated, but it is the same excellent 3in, 921k-dot display as before. The P7100′s form factor is almost exactly the same as the P7000, and is partly defined by the same optical viewfinder – a slightly anachronistic touch on a modern compact camera, perhaps, but no doubt a welcome one for some users and useful in some situations.

Meaningful changes can be seen though to both its ergonomics and operational speed, if you go looking for them. The most obvious physical additions are a command dial dial on the front of the camera, and of course that flip-out LCD screen on the rear. Operationally, Nikon claims to have greatly increased the P7100′s responsiveness compared to the P7000, in everything from image processing time to menu activation/dismissal – areas in which the P7000 badly lagged behind its competitors.

Nikon Coolpix P7100

In all other external respects, the P7100 resembles its predecessor. Like the P7000, the P7100 offers full manual exposure control, and pleasantly chunky mode dials on the top-plate, which reinforce the utilitarian, fashionably ‘old fashioned’ design aesthetic which is so prevalent in its class.

Controls

As befits a camera body taking its stylistic cue from a DSLR, the Nikon Coolpix P7100 sports a busy layout bristling with buttons and dials.

Screen

The new angle adjustable 3-inch, 4:3 aspect ratio LCD screen is one of the Nikon Coolpix P7100’s main talking points. The other option is angling the screen uprwards when holding the camera low to the ground for that exaggerated perspective shot.

Battery

Indeed the P7100 offers 150 more frames than the much more compact Canon.

Picture quality

In terms of shooting with the P7100, here the 7.1x optical zoom with a 28-200mm equivalent range in 35mm film terms, is quick to respond, if noisy.

Verdict

Best suited to existing Nikon DSLR users, the brick-like Coolpix P7100 ‘compact’ offers similar heft and control set, including the ability to shoot top quality Raw files alongside humble JPEG. Following on from the P7000 this 10.1 megapixel model’s benefits are a tilting rear LCD and extra poke in the speed department.

The camera is available in three colors orange, black, and blue. A 3-inch, 460k-dot LCD dominates the rear of the camera. The camera has all the standard control buttons including a zoom rocker, dedicated movie button, self timer, flash control, and exposure compensation—and adds a special control button on the left side of the camera, called the Action button.

This button can be configured to bring up the GPS world map or to adjust shooting settings. There are fewer shooting options, the camera doesn’t have Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, or Manual modes. The camera is rated to survive drops of up to 5 feet and can be used underwater to depths of 33 feet. The AW100 is the speediest rugged camera that we’ve tested. Other rugged cameras we’ve tested, like the Pentax Optio WG-1 were much slower. I used Imatest to measure the camera’s performance in terms of image sharpness and noise. The software analyzes a test chart as shot by the camera to deliver a center-weighted sharpness score, measured in lines per picture height.

The Panasonic Lumix TS3 didn’t do nearly as well, recording only 1,347 lines. Images become noisier as the camera’s sensitivity to light, measured as ISO, is increased. The AW100 keeps image noise below 1.5 percent through ISO 800, which lets you shoot with freedom in dimmer light. The quality is quite good, and the camera can zoom in and out while recording. The camera supports standard SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards. Overall, the AW100 is an excellent first attempt from Nikon at a rugged camera. Like most rugged cameras, the AW100 is quite pricey.

It’s a simple box-shaped camera with a slightly bulging lens barrel to house the 7x optical zoom. It would be nice to see the zoom on the screen like we saw with the Nikon Coolpix S100 but instead the S6150 has a small rocker switch wrapped around the shutter release button. The power button is sat next to the shutter release and lights up green when the camera is switched on. One of the buttons on the back is the direct video button which will begin recording video around a second after you press the button. On the top right shoulder facing the back of the S1650, the camera has a USB and HDMI port for downloading either pictures or video.

There’s also a spanner icon to go into the set-up menu.
The Nikon Coolpix S6150 is SD, SDHC and SDXC compatible for ultra large memory capacities. The touch-screen could be more responsive. We tested the Nikon Coolpix S6150′s shutter lag a number of times. Normally, a digital compact camera will provide a pre-focused result of around 0.08 seconds. Getting the camera to focus can be an issue, though. The Nikon Coolpix S6150 has a drive mode located in the bottom menu.

There’s the touch shutter, subject tracking and touch AF/AE. It works very well but then Nikon metering always has. In playback, there’s quite a decent amount of things to do on the Nikon Coolpix S6150. Pressing the up arrow at the bottom of the screen brings the playback menu up. There’s the option to select favourites, create a slideshow, lock pictures, direct print, edit and draw. Nikon’s new cameras have in-camera charging systems so you can charge directly from USB or connect the USB cable to a mains plug to charge from a socket.
